Event description

Event Title: The ABC of creating inclusive teams in active learning
Location Information:

Engineers House, Bristol: Thursday 16th May - SOLD OUT

Westminster, London: Wednesday 12th June - SOLD OUT

Engineers House, Bristol: Wednesday 17th July

How do you teach around team experiences and shape the learning? Does it happen by osmosis? How can you design activities to be inclusive? Do students see what 'team bad' looks like and learn from that? Do friendships work best as self-selecting teams? Is learning the deepest by using this route? What kind of things can you do to provide a better, more inclusive, experience for all your students? How can you ensure stereotyped roles such as managing time, taking minutes or doing the presentation are shared. How can shy, non-native English speakers gain more confidence in presenting? How can more neurodivergent students be involved and supported as part of the team? How do you convince accrediting bodies / Athena SWAN Panels that you have an inclusive culture?

This workshop draws on the Designing inclusive engineering education report and our Inclusive Engineering Education tool. It will be interactive, activity based, and will draw on good practice from each other with discussion stimulated by structured conversations. The workshop leader will present various research pieces and help explore ways of managing team set up and facilitating conversations around making learning deeper. Student team formation will be deconstructed to be inclusive and provide quality of opportunity for learning to all. Material that will be covered follows our ABCD approach:

A Awareness of how team projects and experiences can offer a differential experience

B Basics of professional skills relating to team working and communication

C Collaborative team experience is combined with reflection to understand what works well and how each person brings something different

D Defining the next steps of personal learning in an intentional learning plan
