The Absolute Zero Project Meets Extinction Rebellion
Event Information
About this Event
Come and engage in dialogue about the practical realities of rapidly reducing carbon emissions with Professor Julian Allwood, Professor of Engineering and the Environment at the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Julian will give a brief talk followed by extended discussion.
Julian leads the Absolute Zero project*. Its report takes an uncompromising look at how emissions, for which the UK is responsible, can be reduced to zero by 2050 as required by the 2008 Climate Change Act. The group rules out technological fixes like carbon capture and storage as impossible to scale up quickly enough. The report provides a pathway for expanding the things that enable life to flourish while avoiding activities that lead to catastrophic climate breakdown.
Come to reflect, challenge and consider the implications for action in XR. How can the time to “absolute zero” be shortened? How can XR encourage the transformation that is needed?
Please encourage others to join us. Julian has produced a three-minute introduction to his position on climate breakdown for his students which you can access here: https://youtu.be/_FaFiR5znmA
The event is free but please register your attendance with Eventbrite. You will be sent the Zoom link in the confirmation email. If you have any issues attending, please email xr.cam.absolute.zero@protonmail.com.
