Description

The Abyssinian Expedition: Magdala at 150

Various Speakers

April 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the British Expedition to Abyssinia (Ethiopia), the fall of Magdala, and the death of Emperor Tewodros.

A large international conference is being organised by Gondar University (in partnership with other Ethiopian institutions) to take place in Gondar, Debre Tabor, and Magdala. This evening’s event will be an opportunity for some papers contributed by British authors to be re-presented to a UK audience. Subjects will include discussion of a small manuscript notebook written during the march to Magdala, embroidered dresses collected during the expedition, and the role of HM Stanley as the special correspondent for the New York Herald.

The Anglo-Ethiopian Society is affiliated to the University of London’s Centre of African Studies (CAS) and all of our events at SOAS are co-hosted with CAS.
