About this Event

The Activate Collective invite you to Knock Down Barriers (Newcastle):

A screening of Knock Down the House and a conversation with a brilliant panel of experts by experience on empowering female activists and community champions

Across the UK, diverse women are leading local communities, addressing unmet needs, and innovating for change. Our mission is to champion female activists who are supporting their local communities with practical and creative responses to ignored needs to expand their activism. Come listen and share with brilliant women about how together we can transform communities and the political system.The evening includes a screening of the film Knock Down the House and a discussion with a brilliant panel on empowering female activists and community champions.

Programme

5.30: Food and social

6pm: Knock Down the House film screening

7.30-9pm: Discussion with :

- Councillor Irim Ali (Trainee solicitor and community worker. Labour Councillor for Wingrove Ward in Newcastles West End. Irim is the first woman of colour to become a Councillor in the North East)

- Dr Orly Siow (Lecturer on gender and representation in politics at the University of Newcastle)

- Heather Walters (Community campaigner and expert by experience on hunger, poverty and universal credit, from Byker)

- Zainab Asunramu (The Activate Collective, formerly at Amnesty International UK. Zainabs diverse experience includes working as a Parliamentary Researcher, and canvassing for a black female MP in the 2019 General Election)

This event is free. Financial support is available to subsidise the cost of travel/childcare if needed to join us for the event, please get in touch with katie@timetoactivate.org to find out more. The venue is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet.
