Event description
The Adventures of Prince Achmed, one of the most important works in animation, screened with a new multi-instrumental score by Chris Davies

About this Event

The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a 1926 German animated fairytale film by Lotte Reiniger. It is one of the world’s most innovative and influential animations: three years in the making, made in card cut entirely by hand. Here we present the film with a new live score composed and performed by Chris Davies.

The film is full of all the thrilling adventure, magic and romance that you’d expect of a classic fairytale. Chris Davies's score, commissioned for Bradford Animation Festival, reinvigorates the film with skilful composition and live performance using a spectacular array of instruments from around the world to accompany Prince Achmed’s journey from the Middle East, to Africa, China and beyond.

“Lotte Reiniger's brilliant Adventures of Prince Achmed is a true animation gem. Historically, it is an important work in the animation canon and within the global film community. Moreover, when coupled with musician Chris Davies's new score, Reiniger's work leaps anachronistically to present day and back again. It's as if you're watching the film as it should be viewed: in the 1920s. His accompaniment is a work of art in itself. I recommend it wholeheartedly.” Mark Shapiro, Studio Laika

In a career spanning 35 years, Chris Davies has toured nationally and internationally as musician, composer, performer, musical director and tour manager with a number of acclaimed companies including Inner Sense Percussion, Horse and Bamboo Theatre, Whalley Range Allstars and Mr Wilson’s Second Liners. He composes original scores for live performance using a full orchestra of international percussion instruments, bamboo and metal flutes, oud, guitar, saxophone, keyboards, voice, sampling and digital technology. Recent works include an artistic response to quantum physics from the Chaturang Indian Dance Company and compositions for the Bird in the Hand Theatre Company.
