Description

Join the *Peregrini Lindisfarne Landscape Partnership Scheme Community Geologist, Dr Ian Kille and fossil amphibian expert Dr Nick Fraser for a fascinating walk and talk about the ancient environment early amphibians lived in.
The event will include:
  • a short talk by Dr Ian Kille to summarise the work carried out during the Age of Amphibians project
  • Lunch, a finger buffet provided by Livvy Cawthorn featuring local food
  • A talk by Dr Nick Fraser of the National Museum of Scotland on the nature of fossil amphibians and their early development
  • A trip out to Cocklawburn Beach to look at the ancient environment which early amphibians lived in.
Dr Nick Fraser is an international expert on ancient amphibians. He has also worked with the TW:eed project which has been looking at the very first amphibians which evolved from lobe-finned fishes and emerged onto the land, an event which presaged a massive divergence of land based tetrapods. The large diversity of amphibians which resulted, before very long gave rise to the reptiles and the inevitable evolutionary steps to the birds and mammals including us lately arrived hominids. The beginning of the Carboniferous period, 350 million years ago, is a particularly exiting time in our evolutionary history and this event will provide an entertaining and fascinating insight into this ancient world.

The event will also be use to elicit views from the participants on what the legacy inperpretative material for this project should cover.

You can hear more about Nick on this interview which he did for the Radio 4 Life Scientific series.
Information about the Parish Centre can be found here. It is located right next to the Cromwellian Parish Church, The Parade TD15 1DF Berwick upon Tweed.
The event cover photograph is from a drawing by Mark Witton and shows a reconstruction of the early Carboniferous environment.

*The Peregrini Lindisfarne Landscape Partnership Scheme is supported by Heritage Lottery funding.
