About this Event

7:30 - 8:30 - Alexander Technique Presentation with audience Participation

8:30 - 9.00 Q&A

The talk will cover the following content with audience participation and a handout at the end.

• Introduction to The Alexander Technique, how it works and it’s benefits.

• How the adage “pull your shoulders back and stand up straight” is not useful as it

creates body tension.

• How instead you can use the Technique to aid good natural movement and improve

your body image.

• How to sit and stand with poise.

• How appropriate muscle tension makes movement lighter and easier.

I was running a half day workshop recently and asked this question to the group -What does good posture mean to you?

A few seconds of thought brought these responses from people -

Not slumping, being straighter.

Not being in pain after a day at the office.

Standing up straight without rounded shoulders.

Looking confident but standing in a relaxed way, like the actors I saw chatting after a performance at The Edinburgh festival.

Good posture should not involve muscular tension. It is not a parade ground pull your shoulders back and stand up straight. You can only keep this up while you think about it and it involves lots of effort.

Good natural posture is having ease in your body. Being poised.

The Alexander Technique is a great way to start to re-educate your body back into good postural habits. A small child has a naturally well aligned body, but as we enter adulthood it can all go downhill. The slouch and the slump set in.
