The Alt-Right, Holocaust Denial and Distortion Online
Event Information
About this Event
The events in the United States in the first week of 2021 made internationally visible rhetoric and symbols that have been proliferating online for some time. Images, words and actions that emphasised that online expressions of far-right/ 'alt-right' ideas, including antisemitism, and Holocaust denial and distortion, can have real and deadly consequences.
In our March online discussion, we invite academics focusing on the 'alt-right's' relationship with the digital, from social media to gaming, and those working in organisations who have been developing campaigns and reports on antisemitism, and Holocaust denial and distortion online to speak about this area of increasing concern.
Some of the questions that may be covered by our speakers include:
- Where do alt-right ideas emerge online?
- How are they communicated?
- How they come into the mainstream?
- Why are such ideologies proliferated in online spaces?
- What strategies can we use to identify, monitor, and combat them?
- What campaigns have been launched to put pressure on major corporations to take responsibility for denial and distortion in their platforms?
- How effect have these campaigns been?
- How effective is the action of corporations taking it upon themselves to ban prominent far-right and hateful voices? Is this enough?
- How are online conspiracies like QAnon related to long histories of antisemitism
- Does Holocaust education need to be more visible in online spaces such as Reddit, Parlour, 4Chan, 8kun and Telegram or are there other strategies that would help us combat the spread of such hate?
Our speakers will each present for about 10 minutes to begin the session; we will then move onto a more open discussion with all participants.
