Event description

Description

Sarah-Jane Critchley will run an interactive session on Autism and Girls.

Increasing numbers of girls and women are now being recognised as autistic. Autism has been diagnosed far more often in boys than girls, leading to the assumption that ‘girls don’t have autism’. Autism was historically diagnosed against criteria which only looked for stereotypically ‘male’ set of behaviours. This has decreased the support available and increased vulnerability of girls who are far more likely to mask their difficulties and ‘fly under the radar’ with an impact on their mental illness and increased risk of suicide. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Learn how understanding a different presentation of autism builds strength and hope.

In this interactive session you will learn:

  • What is Autism and what does it look like in girls?
  • Diagnosis – why it is so difficult
  • What we know and what we don’t know from research
  • Girls and Pathologic Demand Avoidance (PDA)
  • Girls, friendships and bullying
  • Experiences of autistic girls and women – what are the issues?
  • Gender, sexuality and vulnerability
  • Autism and eating disorders
  • Strength, determination, focus and hope – the legacy of autistic women

Sarah-Jane is passionate about helping autistic people, their families, friends and supporters live happier lives of their own choosing. She is the internationally recognised author of 'A Different Joy: the parents' guide to living better with autism, dyslexia, ADHD and more...'

The Pavilion at Impington Village College will be open for attendees from 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

We are not charging for this event but would welcome donations on the evening (a suggested donation of £5 per ticket).
