This November, step into a world of wonder as the Cathedral is transformed by The Angels are Coming! – an awe-inspiring light and sound spectacular by the award-winning artistic collaboration, Luxmuralis.
As Advent approaches, immerse yourself in a magical, modern celebration of Christmas. Stunning light displays, mesmerising projections, and beautiful music fill every corner of the space—guiding you through a powerful journey that ends with the story of the very first Christmas unfolding before your eyes.
What to expect
The experience involves walking through the Cathedral to view a number of different light and sound projections. Each installation lasts around 5-8 minutes on a continuous loop, ending with a projection lasting approximately 18 minutes. The whole experience should take around 45-60 minutes*.
*Please note, the accessible/step-free experience should take around 30-45 minutes, due to a shorter route.
This exhibition includes loud sounds, music and moving and flashing images throughout the experience, as well as bright lights and areas of darkness within the Cathedral. We would advise bringing your own ear defenders if required.
About Luxmuralis
Luxmuralis is a leading artistic collaboration between sculptor Peter Walker and composer David Harper, renowned for immersive fine art, light, and sound installations across the UK and internationally.
Specialising in large-scale experiences rooted in the fine art tradition, Luxmuralis transforms public and unexpected spaces—especially cathedrals and sacred sites—into powerful, evocative journeys through light and sound. Drawing on the concept of Son et Lumière, their work merges contemporary media with deep art historical context, engaging audiences emotionally and physically as they move through the spaces.
Credited as creating the “stained glass windows of our time,” Luxmuralis doesn’t just illuminate buildings—they bring them to life, painting with light to tell stories that resonate with both the heritage of the place and modern sensibilities. Each exhibition is a curated fine art experience, designed to connect the ancient and contemporary, making art more accessible and deeply meaningful.
The proceeds from Luxmuralis at Southwark Cathedral will go towards supporting the Cathedral’s mission and ministry, safeguarding its heritage and to developing its outreach and education offerings.
