Event description

Description

As more and more people suffer from stress and anxiety disorders in urban areas, how can we use design to improve mental health in cities?

The Anxious City is a cross-disciplinary festival organized by Healing Places that will explore the question of stress in the city through the lens of architecture, design, science and art.

For this unique experience, we will bring together a community of Dutch and international health experts, space designers, citizens and artists to share knowledge, debate and engage in new ways of experiencing and shaping urban spaces. The festival will take place in Rotterdam West and will combine talks, installations as well as a special program with artistic interventions

The Conference pass gives you access to: the opening program (31/08) + 2 day conference (01 and 02/09) + design installations

2 DAY CONFERENCE: Learn & Get inspired
Why does living in cities make us so stressed? How does physical space influence our mental health? How could we use cognitive, interactive and behavioural sciences to create therapeutic spaces in cities? During the two-day conference, we will invite researchers and practitioners from different fields to explore these questions, sharing their inspiring research and design projects.

Speakers include:

  • Robert V. Levine (US) - professor of Social Psychology at California State University

  • Filipa Matos Wunderlicht (UK) - lecturer in Urban Design at Bartlett School of Planning, University College of London

  • Claudia Aguirre (US) - neuroscientist and mind-body expert

  • Maaike Helmer (NL) - founder and editor-in-chief of STRESSED OUT magazine

  • Antonella Radicchi (DE) - soundscape scientist & HEAD-Genuit Foundation fellow

  • Astrid Groenewegen (NL) - behavioural designer, co-founder of SUE Amsterdam and The Behavioural Design Academy

Dates: September 1 & 2, 2018
Location: Delfshaven - Fair Design Plein

INSTALLATIONS: Test the stress-reduction prototypes
For 6 months, Healing Places has gathered a multidisciplinary team to design solutions for reducing stress in public space. We invite you to discover the results of this experiment and test the prototypes of stress-relieving spaces in the district of Delfshaven (Rotterdam West). The result of this experiment will serve to develop innovative tools to design therapeutic urban spaces.

ARTISTIC PROGRAM: Sense the city
Whether is active stimulations or sensory deprivation, body senses play an important part in stress reactions. During the festival, we have curated an artistic program that will trigger your senses.
