Event description

Description

A CPD event organised by the Institution of Lighting Professionals and hosted by Arup.

This evening is aimed at everyone in the communities of lighting, art, design and the public realm, to learn and feel inspired about how different skills combine to produce light which benefits the public.

Engineering the art
JONATHAN GITTINS, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, ATELIER TEN
The Illuminated River will be the longest public art commission in the world. As well as providing the technical lighting design to help deliver the artistic vision, Atelier Ten have been working from day one to ensure the scheme is sensitive to its surroundings and minimises light pollution and light spill into the river. Jonathan will talk about the project and provide insight into the design process and technical challenges that have been overcome in bringing the Illuminated River to the public.

The social science – how does light make people feel and behave?
ELETTRA BORDONARO, CO-FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR, LIGHT FOLLOWS BEHAVIOUR
Elettra’s design work focuses on collaborating with communities to develop human centred lighting approaches to urban spaces. She has lectured internationally and is currently a visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics’ Configuring Light Research group.

Tales from the riverbank: volunteering stories
HARRIET PARKIN, HULL CITY COUNCIL; GUUS KETELINGS, CU PHOSCO AND EMMA BEADLE, WSP
The ILP created a group of volunteers to experience first-hand the development of the Illuminated River. Harriet, Guus and Emma are all building their lighting careers and will share their adventures of providing practical support to the artist Leo Villareal on site during his late night-time digital sequencing work on and around the bridges. Hear about their opinions on the art and science of light and perhaps what is coming next for them following this opportunity…

Doors open at 6pm, talks start at 6.30pm followed by refreshments and networking until 9pm.
