One of the many reasons why navigating the sciences is a challenge for underrepresented groups, is that the environment for engaging and communicating prioritises technical knowledge and language that may not be accessible to all. Fortunately, creatives and business development leaders have made careers out of navigating and marketing to a range of audiences and sectors. Similarly, there is a growth of individuals in science communication from underrepresented groups who are tackling this challenge using approaches from creative and media fields.

This afternoon workshop calls on post-graduate research students in the sciences and those collaborating with scientific fields looking to improve their networking and relationship building skills. This workshop will provide tools and “tricks of the trade” from creative and business-oriented sectors and hands-on skills tailored for groups that are underrepresented in the sciences. This workshop will present tools and exercises to build self-awareness of personal conversational style, conversational styles of different characters within the sciences and tools for tackling tricky conversations utilising input from creative and business-oriented industries. The workshop will provide an opportunity for scenario work in small groups, a feedback session and close with a networking reception.

This session will include:

1. an introduction to different conversational styles and communication strategies

2. a discussion of top ten “tricks of the trade” from experts in creative and business development backgrounds

3. an opportunity in break-out sessions to test these conversation and relationship building techniques

4. a networking session for participants to exchange feedback and connect
