Event description

Description

Cardboard Citizens is renowned as being one of the world's leading Forum Theatre companies, and is nationally recognised as an organisation leading in supporting individual and social change through our work.

“Cardboard Citizens helped our people express themselves, build aspiration and confidence in a way that could never be achieved through other means. We highly recommend them as an organisation that helps people at their most vulnerable to regain their self-esteem and aspiration through the use of the arts.”
Charlie Norman, Group Chief Executive, Mosscare St Vincents

Join us for a taster and an insight into our approach in how to use Forum Theatre and other Theatre of the Oppressed tools, underpinned by pastoral support, to identify barriers, overcome challenges, and engage marginalised groups.

The day will mix practical exercises, games, workshops, presentations, and reflective approaches, enabling you to learn more about Cardboard Citizens’ unique approach to supporting people with lived experience – a strengths-based, person-focused approach to co-production – through a balance of performing arts and pastoral support.

The day will give you:

  • Practical examples of the Forum Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed techniques we use with people with lived experience of homelessness, in London and across the country.
  • Ideas and advice about approaches to pastoral support for people in crisis, through role-play, exploration and practical resources
  • Real-life stories of how the Citz model of Theatre of the Oppressed and pastoral support has impacted on people’s lives
  • Understanding of how any of us might become homeless, through reflective practice
  • An opportunity make your own Forum Theatre scratch scene

Who’s it for? Anyone interested in TO approaches and creative ways of engaging and supporting vulnerable people. Specifically, practitioners working in theatre and the arts; public and social sector staff; people with lived experience of homelessness

Following the training: there will be an opportunity to apply to support the North-West Cardboard Camp - Cardboard Citizens' ongoing programme in the North-West, in partnership with the Royal Exchange Theatre. For more information, visit: https://www.royalexchange.co.uk/cardboard-camp-manchester
