Event description

Description

What could be more uncomfortably human than lying? An act of hope and fear, daring and cowardice that is oddly creative at the same time – few practiced the art of lying better than Harvey Matusow. This 2-night programme investigates this one-time Communist turned celebrity FBI informant who later re-invented himself as a champion of London’s 1960s arts-scene and writer for the infamous Oz magazine.

In the first of our two events, we offer a multimedia presentation of never-before-seen material from Matusow’s archive at the University of Sussex Special Collections, including rare films and images, a live-link to New York, and a roundtable discussion featuring University of Sussex faculty, music journalists, and archive professionals.

PLEASE NOTE This event is part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities. As our festival events are free, not everyone who asks for tickets come to our events. To make sure we have a full house, we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people. Admission is on a first-come-first-served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
