The Art of Public Speaking: Parliamentary Debating
Thu 30 March 2017, 19:30 – 20:30 BST
On 30th March 2017, the Richard Austen Butler Debating Society invites you to learn how to debate from The Rt. Hon. Sir Alan Haselhurst MP.
The Society is delighted that Sir Alan will be returning to address our first event of 2017 with his insights into the art of public speaking, learned throughout a remarkable parliamentary career.
We fully intend for our members to be able to take part in debates and many more functions yet to come, and so believe that this will prove to be an invaluable formative experience.
Commencing 19:30pm at the Court Room, Saffron Walden Town Hall, guests will be made welcome to a discussion on constructing and persevering in dialectic argument. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions so as to further develop their debating styles.
Concluding at 20:30pm, all guests are invited to a follow-up informal gathering for drinks at the Old English Gentleman, 11 Gold Street, Saffron Walden, CB10 1EJ.
Sir Alan Haselhurst has been Member of Parliament for Saffron Walden since 1977, and was previously Member of Parliament for Middleton and Prestwich from 1970 - 1974. He achieved a role in Government as PPS to Home Secretary Robert Carr, and later to Education and Science Secretary Mark Carlisle. Most notably, Sir Alan became Chairman of the Ways and Means and Deputy Speaker in 1997.
