Event description
Discuss and solve puzzles with Rob and Ben, and learn about the art of making a dull question into a fascinating puzzle.

About this Event

At their best, puzzles can be a wonderful way to engage people in mathematical ideas. Good puzzles are amusing, thought-provoking and have satisfying twists and outcomes. But puzzles can also be intimidating or dull, and leave the solver feeling stupid, frustrated or annoyed. In this workshop, Rob Eastaway and Ben Sparks will reveal some of their favourite – and least favourite – puzzles, and look at the art of turning an ‘OK’ puzzle into a great one.

Rob Eastaway is best known for his popular maths books including Why Do Buses Come In Threes? and Maths On The Back Of An Envelope. He is the puzzle adviser to New Scientist magazine. https://robeastaway.com/

Ben Sparks is a maths communicator and teacher whose engaging videos on Youtube’s Numberphile channel have been watched by millions. He’s interested in the links between maths and puzzles, performance and magic, and other chances to engineer ‘aha’ moments. https://www.bensparks.co.uk/
