About this event

APUK is excited to invite you to take part in a new creative course designed especially for Autistic parents in Birmingham . Please note you must live in Birmingham and have a Birmingham postcode to be able to participate in these sessions.

These sessions are part of a project funded by Birmingham Forward Carers, where APUK are supporting creative opportunities for Autistic parent carers in the city.

The group sessions will be held via Zoom and led by an experienced, Autistic Art Facilitator. Together, we’ll explore Autistic identity through creativity, focusing on your journey into and through parenthood.

You don’t need to be an experienced artist to take part! Just open to expressing yourself, connecting with others, and having a go.

We aim to create a safe, affirming space where you can unmask, be yourself, and maybe even find the beginnings of a village that supports you beyond this course.

If you are unable to make the sessions, they will be recorded and available to view after the event on Eventbrite.

Materials

Not all materials from the list are required, tasks will be open ended and participants are free to interpret the brief in their own way and use their own colours, materials and techniques. All sessions will require a piece of paper and will be mainly painting, drawing and collage to reduce costs. Below is a list of items that you may find useful to have.

To be able to participate in these sessions you need to identify as Autisitc and be a Parent. You must also have a Birmingham Postcode. Participants taking part in our live sessions may be eligible for a voucher towards the cost of materials. Once you have booked you will be emailed and asked to complete a short form.

The sessions will be throughout September online via Zoom, a link will be sent for your chosen session.

Sundays 7th, 14th and 21st starting at 10.30am

Wednesdays 10th, 17th and 24th starting at 7.30pm

Being an Autistic parent can raise unique challenges that historically have been poorly supported. Autistic Parents UK (APUK) is an Autistic-led Charity (CIO) and is committed to supporting Autistic parents in a number of ways:

  • regular blog articles, from Autistic parents sharing lived experience
  • monthly webinars and live Q&A sessions with well-known Autistic Advocates
  • free-to-access training for autistic parents (such as perinatal education and approaches to parenthood workshops)
  • training and supervision for professionals
  • monthly giveaways to increase accessibility to literature and support relevant to Autistic parents
  • online peer support groups (larger and smaller groups)
  • volunteer-led one to one peer support sessions
  • local peer support groups

We are committed to working reflectively and flexibly to improve our support offering and have many plans for future development.
