About this event
How can fantasy writers generate compelling ideas?
How can writers incorporate research, real-life details, and their own fascinations to create rich fantasy worlds?
We’ll be exploring these questions and more in our conversation with international bestselling writer Samantha Shannon. We’ll discuss her writing journey from poetry at Oxford to bestselling fantasy novels, how she deals with writers' block and self-doubt, and tools to incorporate real-world details into fantasy settings.
Samantha Shannon became an international bestselling author at 21 with the publication of The Bone Season, the first installment in a seven-book series of fantasy novels. In 2020, her book The Priory of the Orange Tree was a finalist in the Lambda Literary Awards.
We'll also explore:
- How to plan, plot, and structure fantasy novels
- Samantha's research process, using primary sources for historical research
- Her approach to characterisation and how she spends time in her character's heads
- How Samantha uses her fascination with etymology, mythology, geology, and the natural world to enrich her fantasy novels
