Why do we always see the Greek and Roman deities in museums but never the Viking gods and goddesses? And yet Norse mythology is all around us in popular culture from comics to films. The answers are surprising and sometimes sinister.
This talk explores 1,500 years of Norse mythology in fine art, applied arts and literature, including Viking-age artefacts, Icelandic texts, English paintings by Fuseli and Blake, 19th century Scandinavian works of national romanticism and modern interpretations ranging from Hilma af Klint to Anselm Kiefer.
As it’s the start of the festive season we’ll also look at what contribution the Vikings made to our Christmas traditions: you’ll never look at Santa and mistletoe in the same way again!
