Description
THE ASTRAKAN PROJECT
“World music from beyond our world.”
“Gloriously full-throated, truly inspiring Breton singing and melodies from Simone Alves, with roaring, intricate, fiery, imaginative accompaniment from multi-instrumentalist Yann Gourvil. Truly fabulous and spirit-raising.” - Ian Anderson (fRoots)
“Enjoyably gloomy traditional Breton singing from the pure voice of Simone Alves. Superb songs rendered in an original way.” - Peter Culshaw (Songlines)
Simone Alves (vocals) and Yann Gourvil (guitar, ‘oud, saz, violin, programming) had been collaborating on various music projects in Brittany for about a decade. Astrakan Project was born when they moved to Istanbul, after a couple of concerts hosting Turkish percussionists. They wanted to experiment further with Breton* music as a duet and laid down a couple of tracks, which eventually turned into a self-produced album.
* - Breton is a Celtic language from the West of France (related to Welsh and Cornish) which they both speak.

We are delighted to welcome local roosty folk fivesome The Shimmering Bees featuring Su Eaton on Hurd-Gurdy and Ukulele, Chris Townsend on fiddle and recorder, Martin Bridle on bouzouki, Paul 'Bik' Bickmore on drums and didge and Jani Franck on percussion.
Rootsy drums, drones, twiddles and twangs.........
The Shimmering Bees were formed in January 2009 and are based in Southampton, on the South coast of England.
They play a mix of traditional and modern tunes, with an array of instruments you aren't likely to see very often, from Hurdy-Gurdy to Ukulele, from Didgeridoo and Bougarabou to Glockenspiel and Bouzouki - all blended in perfect harmony with a deep drumming heartbeat, to get your feet moving.
