The Aylesham Site: help shape the future of Peckham town centre.
Event Information
About this event
The new owners – Berkeley Homes – are developing plans for the redevelopment of the Aylesham Shopping Centre, Morrison’s supermarket and TfL Bus Station. They will be consulting the public during 2022 with the aim of submitting their planning application by the end of the year.
This workshop is organised by local people for local people as an introduction to the site and the issues raised by redevelopment. It is aimed at providing a chance to hear what questions and comments there are from other local people, and helping us to be more informed before the developers start asking what we think of their plans. There will be a virtual site visit. This is based on an in-person visit over 20 of us made to the site in November, and the presentation will show photos of the various parts of the site we visited then.
We followed that November site visit with a gathering in a room in nearby Peckham Levels where we discussed in small groups and then shared our thoughts. This was very effective and we will be doing this also in the zoom breakout rooms. We hope that this will be the first of a series of community zoom workshops we aim to organise over the next year. If you want to help in any way please email ayleshamcommunityaction@gmail.com
This workshop is open to the public. But because it is free and designed and organised by local people for other local people who live or work in Peckham, or who visit Peckham town centre as a shopper or user of its services, it is not appropriate for Council staff or representatives or the developers or professionals in the property or development industries.
Aylesham Community Action
Aylesham Community Action (ACA) was formed in 2020 when the previous owners, Blackrock and Tiger Developments, were about to submit plans after a very poor consultation process and with some worrying features. ACA has had informal conversations with Berkeley Homes who have said they will have an extensive consultation process starting from scratch. This is welcome, though it is difficult to see how this can be satisfactory in such a tight timescale.
We know from long experience of dealing with planning applications that local people always benefit from receiving clear understandable information about the issues and the plans and being able to discuss that with other local people to form a rounded picture of the whole development, before they give their views. We call that ‘horizontal’ engagement which is rarely if ever available in Council or developers’ consultations. We look forward to you joining us.
Please note: This is a free online event. Joining instructions, as well as more information about the event will be shared with registered attendees closer to the date.
