Professor Sir Malcolm Evans, Chair of the UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture

For the last eight years Malcolm Evans has been a member, and chair, of a UN body, the UN subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture, which travels the world visiting places of detention. It aims to ensure that torture and ill treatment are prevented from happening. In this talk, he will explain what is so unique about the work of this body, something of what it has found, and how in his view torture and ill treatment can best be tackled in the world today.

Sir Malcolm Evans is Professor of Public International Law at the University of Bristol. He is a member and Chair of the UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture and, from 2014-2015 Chair of the Meeting of Chairs of UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies. He is also a member of the UK Foreign Secretary’s Human Rights Advisory Group. He is currently a member of the Commission on Religious Education established by the Religious Education Council and is a Member of the Panel of Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in England and Wales (IICSA) established in 2015 by the Home Secretary.
