Event description

Description

The Beggar’s Opera marked a milestone in English musical and theatrical history. Drawing on some real criminal characters and using the folk-songs of the day as a basis, this is a piece which revels in its vitality, its satirical thrust and its depiction of 18th century London. In this lecture by Dr. Richard Moore, find out where Harlequin fits in and what the literati thought of it. Enjoy some filmed extracts and discover how the piece encouraged later ballad opera, even having an influence on Shakespeare at Covent Garden and later on a slightly more middle-class Gilbert and Sullivan.
