The BGC brings their more than decade-old clubnight to London with obscure soul-fuelled records from the SWANA region and around the world

About this event

Now entering its 13th year, the Beirut Groove Collective (BGC) is the premier destination for soul-fuelled clubbing records from ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s Middle-East, Africa and the rest of the world.

On the 15th July at The Jago, the BGC hosts very special guest TootArd for a live show. The Syrian-Arabic rock band TootArd (Arabic: توت أرض, strawberry) is made up of brothers Hasan and Rami Nakhleh who hail from Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and are now based in Bern and Haifa. The band's distinctive sound is an infectious fusion of electro-pop, disco and quarter tone melodic lines – proudly rooted in the Middle East as seen through the lens of global music movements. To date, the band has released three albums: Nuri Andaburi (2011), Laissez Passer (2017), and Migrant Birds (2020) – which pays homage to the West Asian dancefloor scenes of the 1980s.

For over a decade, the DJ collective has thrown one of the Middle East’s most popular clubnights in Beirut, pioneering obscure records from Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Armenia and with live shows from some of the region's most original bands. Representing an underground alternative to the nightlife of Beirut through regular parties in basement clubs, alternative beach venues and warehouse spaces at the forgotten fringes of the city, the BGC has been home for genuine crate-diggers and taste makers from all over the world. Now the BGC has brought their distinctive sound to London city!

The New York Times included the BGC clubnights in their list of the "Top 15" parties around the world, and they've been featured everywhere from The Guardian and Monocle Magazine to ARTE, the BBC, Time Out London and Vice Magazine.

Expect to hear pioneering, genre-forming and obscure records from Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Armenia, Kenya and all around the world – from Ethio Jazz and Bellydance Psych to Armenian Org Stompers, Lebanese '60s Garage
