Dr Jill Miller, Research Adviser, CIPD & Kate Dosanjh
Jill joined the CIPD in 2008 as a research adviser. Her role is a combination of rigorous research and active engagement with academics and practitioners to inform projects and shape thinking. She frequently presents on key people management issues, leads discussions and workshops, and is invited to write for trade press as well as offer comment to national journalists, on radio and TV.
She specialises in people management in SMEs, drawing on her own career in smaller organisations as well as a wealth of case study research she has conducted over the past 3 years. Jill’s work has highlighted the key people management challenges SMEs typically face at different stages of growth. This work is supplemented with deep dives into the areas of recruitment, development and culture and values and Jill has published practically-focused resources for those responsible for the people approach in small businesses. Most recently she has published a report looking at how HR professionals can make maximum impact in an SME, which includes an abundance of reflections and insight from those working in this context.
Jill’s other area of focus is absence management and employee well-being, with a particular focus on mental health. She leads the CIPD’s Absence Management survey. Jill is a psychology graduate with a postgraduate masters and PhD in Management. Previously, Jill lectured at Reading University on International Human Resource Management.
We know that being responsible for the people agenda in an SME is a very different experience from working in a large organisation. Over the past year, CIPD has published a series of research reports focused specifically on people management in SMEs: www.cipd.co.uk/sme
In response to feedback from HR professionals in smaller organisations, CIPD has just published a brand new piece of work looking at how to make maximum impact as an HR professional in an SME.
Drawing on the findings from this research, this interactive event with cover 5 core issues which we have found to be at the forefront of mind of those working in SMEs:
• How do I establish my priorities, balancing what the business says it wants with what I know it needs?
• How do I introduce formality while also reinforcing and building on the culture and values of the company?
• How do I make a convincing business case for change or a new people approach?
• How can I best demonstrate my credibility and impact?
• What personal development is going to benefit me the most?
Dr Jill Miller from the CIPD will share case study insights from the report, but most importantly this event is an opportunity to debate these issues, share learning and experience and leave with practical ideas to implement.
