Event description

Business In the Community (BIC) in partnership with numerous partner organisations including the CIPD and MIND, undertook a national survey to understand the reality of how mental health is experienced at work.

The survey results tell us that progress is being made but there is a need for greater organisational awareness of the support required for better mental health at work. Significant and potentially damaging disconnects exist that demand an urgent response from business.

Employers need to recognise the scale of poor mental health in the workplace and take significant steps to reduce the risk of their workplace being a contributor. Employers have a duty of care to their employees to respond to mental ill health just as they would to a physical illness. Organisations should equip their managers with the tools, support and organisational culture they need to do their job well, which must include managing employees with mental health issues. It makes good business sense to foster a culture of openness that supports employees with a mental health issue to work and stay in work.

In the Tees Valley, because of our demographic profile and areas of higher deprivation, our experience of mental health issues is also greater. For that reason our "Big Event" this year in entirely focused on raising the profile of MH&W in the workplace, to hear from some expert speakers and lessons learned and also to hear from the support organisations that exist across our areas to provide support to individuals and their families and carers for a variety of factors that impact on one's mental health and wellbeing (MH&W).

"The Big Event" will also include our periodic employment law update delivered by Hewitts Solicitors again after they successfully delivered March's update.

The day will commence with registrations from 09:00am and the welcoming address will be at 10:00am by Rachel Suff of CIPD and Advisor to the board of the Heads Together Campaign led by HRH Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry.
