The Big Ideas Weekend is an event for young people, young leaders, volunteers and workers to learn new skills, network, share ideas and to celebrate the impact of youth work!




Who is it for?

For young people, workers and leaders; to expand their knowledge and skills to inspire young people through their work in local communities. Featuring a fantastic choice of over 20 workshops, to empower action through new ideas, tools and resources.There will also be event challenges, entertainment and chance to meet others from all over Scotland.

The Big Ideas Weekend is most suited for:

Workers/Leaders (18 yrs+)

Young People (14+ yrs) - must be accompanied by a worker

Young People (16 yrs+) - can self-book on the event and a completed consent form will need to be filled out and sent in to us prior to the event.

If you are under 16 years of age, a parent or guardian will also be required to sign this completed form.

Youth Scotland Member - weekend rate (residential): £85.00

Non-Member - weekend rate (residential): £105.00

Youth Scotland Member - Weekend Day delegate (Saturday & Sunday - no overnight stay): £60.00

Non-Member - Weekend Day Delegate rate (Saturday & Sunday - no overnight stay): £80.00

Extra Friday night booking: £55.00 - *Friday Night Bookings* – please note that this is an option for further travelled groups, who need to travel ahead of the programme, the cost is for bed & breakfast with accommodation only; please note there is no programme on the Friday night and you will need to self-cater your time and meals.

Bookings Conditions:

1. Big Ideas Weekend is a no alcohol event for all participants

2. Residential guests must remain onsite at all times

3. Youth Scotland consent forms must be used in addition to your own, and returned asap after booking and no later than 48 hours before the event

4. Young people under 16 yrs+ must be accompanied by a youth worker/volunteer, or as part of a youth group

5. Please note any bookings made after 31st May will be non-refundable, however, substitutions can be made.

Saturday Workshop Choices:

Art Activities

This fun and creative workshop will allow participants to try out a range of art activities that they can use back at their own group.

Coding and digital skills

Learn about the world of coding, with micro-bits, raspberry-Pis, Makey Makeys and other digital resources; learn to code simple programmes and how to engage others with the technology.

Drama Activities

Learn to lead drama activities that build skills, confidence and creativity in a fun way, using simple techniques. Tackle issue-based youth work through an award winning toolkit and resource.

Introduction to the workshop of rap

This fun and interactive workshop will look at what rap is, the benefits of rap and it will give participants a chance to try out writing a rap as well.

Outdoors

Learn to be the next Bear Grylls! Participate in simple activities which will give you techniques to connect with nature.

Special Effects Make-Up

Learn how to create stunning special effects, be the next extra for the Walking Dead! This practical workshop will teach you how to make, apply and style wounds and injuries to scare anyone who didn’t attend! Beware of the first aiders!

Super Science Experiments and Activities (STEM Activities)

Do you want to make a rocket out of a balloon, power a light with a lemon or build a newspaper den? Come and learn how you could become the next Einstein and try out some fun science activities from the Hi5 STEM toolkit.




WORKERS

Saturday Workshop Choices:

Funders Workshop

Last year we had 5 major funders in Scotland including The Robertson Trust, Gannochy Trust and The Big Lottery. Funders for Big Ideas 2019 tbc.

Each funder will give a short intro to their organisation and explain how they could help you make a difference in your youth group and wider community. You will then have a chance to informally chat to funders on a 1-2-1 basis about ideas you have and top tips on applying for funding.

Games Workshop

Learn an array of fun, energising and practical games, icebreakers, energisers and fun activities that can fill some time in programmes or be a session all of its own!

Introduction to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

This workshop will explore what Adverse Childhood Experiences are and how they impact on your role as a youth worker/volunteer.

Media Makers

Learn the fundamentals of digital storytelling and interview technique, and how to apply what you've learned to tell the "Social Story" of your projects and communities. Learn simple techniques for shooting great quality video with the devices in your pockets, how to make an impact and create an amazing story.

Peaches and Aubergines

YouthBorders & NHS Borders Joint Health Improvement Team bring you Peaches & Aubergines – a resource toolkit developed by young people for young people to provide information, links and video clips around issues relevant to them: healthy relationships, consent and respect.

Smart Justice

Are some of the young people you work with involved in the criminal justice system? If somebody commits a crime, treating them fairly and helping them to get back on track is the most effective way to reduce the likelihood of re-offending. The first step is changing the way we think about justice. Would you like to explore tools to have conversations about justice with the young people you work with?

Young People and Positive Coping Strategies

This workshop will explore a range of different coping strategies and create choices to create a pathway to a healthier lifestyle, manage stress, anger management, emotions and health for young people―with the added bonus that staff can incorporate these for themselves.

Young Placechangers

Find out how you and your youth group can get involved in the Young placechangers programme and apply for funding. This active workshop will take you both inside and out!




YOUNG PEOPLE

Sunday Workshop Choices:

First Aid Ready Awareness

Learn the basic emergency first aid skills through being First Aid Ready. Learn about the recovery position and CPR, about keeping safe in an emergency and how to take practical steps to help someone in an emergency.

Games Activities

Learn an array of fun, energising and practical games, icebreakers, energisers and fun activities that can fill some time in programmes or be a session all on its own!

DJing and Music Production

Want to be the next Calvin Harris? Take part in an introduction to DJing skills session, learn the basics of beat matching, mixing, effects alongside how to use media to livestream or create an internet radio station.

Parkour

Parkour includes running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, rolling, and other movements as deemed most suitable for the situation. Parkour involves seeing the environment in a new way and imagining the potential for navigating it by movement around, across, through, over and under its features.

Play

Learn about the world of Play, the role of being a Play Champion and learn about the skills and activities to lead a simple play session with creativity and minimal resources.

Sunday Workshop Choices:

Is a fun creative session which will introduce you to a range of arts activities you can take back to your own youth group or setting.

Conflict Resolution

The aims of this workshop are to allow us to understand the role conflict plays in our lives, how to respond to conflict and how to work towards resolution.

Involving Young People in Decision Making

This fun and interactive workshop will look at how to engage young people in decision making and it will also explore techniques workers can use in their own youth groups.

Special Effects Make-Up

Learn how to create stunning special effects. This practical workshop will teach you how to make, apply and style wounds and injuries and run special effects make up sessions for your young people. Perfect for Halloween/ Residentials/ Zombie theme nights etc.
