The Big Local Content Debate

The statement:

This house believes that local content laws in Africa have failed to deliver on promises to both businesses and populations

This debate offers the opportunity to hear from senior figures who are dealing with local content challenges every day as well as leading policy makers who both set the framework and expect to see progress on Local Content.

Local content legislation is in place or being debated in more than 20 African countries and has been around in some markets for over 40 years. Now more than ever the right approach to Local Content has severe implications across your business, especially the bottom line.

Businesses operating in Africa today, across sectors, are constantly battling to strike the right balance between the need to source more locally - whilst building capacity and creating jobs - with the commercial challenges of running a business. Getting this right will often decide your ability to operate profitably over the long run, but there is no proven model.

Which is why it remains important that lessons learned are shared, local content policy is understood and the way forward is agreed.

Our team of expert panellists will lend their considerable knowledge and experience to addressing this timely question, marshalled by the Editor of African Business, Lanre Akinola. We also invite you to contribute to ensure that all opinions and viewpoints are considered.

Our panellists include:

Rosalind Kainyah, Founder & CEO, Kina Advisory

Sandy Stash, VP Sustainabllty, External Affairs and Safety, Tullow Oil

Peter Kasanda, Partner, Clyde & Co.

Dr. Akanimo Odon, ‎Africa Strategy and Business Expert - ‎National Economic Empowerment Council, Prime Minister's Office (Tanzania)

Dr Michael Warner, Director & Founder, Local Content Solutions
