What is The Big Outdoors! ?
Do you enjoy the thrill and adventure of the Big Outdoors. Are you keen to learn new skills? Would you like to meet and socialise with like minded people? Or maybe you just want some peaceful time-out whilst camping far from the madding crowd?
The Big Outdoors is the UKs’ premier camping and outdoor learning experience for all the family. An event for outdoor enthusiasts to learn, meet, share, relax and enjoy, set in the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park. Places are strictly limited resulting in a safe and social experience ideal for families.
We offer many interesting on-site activities, ranging from casualty care to food preparation, from bush-craft to navigation, and many more, all included in the ticket price. For those who want to go the extra mile we have lined up a few specialist activities at extra cost, or we are happy to help you organise your own extra activities in the local area.
All you need is a sense of adventure, a willingness to learn and of course something to sleep in or on! We reckon we have seen them all now – hammocks, roll mats, bivvys, tents and all manner of vehicle based options. So go on, take the plunge, come and join us, the Adventure is out there, The Adventure is Here!
There are many activities to participate in at The Big Outdoors! some free as part of the ticket cost and some to buy as "Bolt On" extras.
Free activities include:

We delighted to have Sam Wilson joining us pass on his expertise in dealing with casualty scenarios. Sam’s sessions are not the normal run of the mill first aid orientated scenarios that you would of come across through ‘normal’ course. These sessions are designed to give everyone heads up and help with dealing with a casualty situation, they are tailored to our activities. Sam is also on hand over the course of the weekend should you have any other First Aid based questions/concerns to raise with him.
o Bushcraft with Victoria
Victoria Lundstrum from West Coast Adventure stunned man, woman and children alike back in May at the first Big Outdoors when she kicked off her first Bushcraft practical sharing out some locusts to eat – yummmm – crunchy! Victoria will be taking things a stage further this time with more fun, creative outdoor learning suitable for children and adults alike.

Our site on the edge of the National Park is within easy reach of some great scenic greenlanes, why not use our site as your base for the days leading up to the event main starting at the weekend and get out and explore the various tracks and trails Wales has to offer. Mark will happily share his knowledge with those no site looking to confirm legalities and where they can go plus once you have paid up you will be invited to join our Secret Face Book page where you can arrange trips with like minded people.

Nick Watts will be joining us to show us all how to make field repairs with topics covering: improvised welding, vehicle bush repairs and puncture management. Nick has been involved with 4x4Adventures for many years and the stark memory of him welding Rogue Vogue at Walters Arena in a flowing river, during an event using kit he had on board his challenge truck was an unforgettable memory. A welder and Fabricator by trade there are many tricks and tips Nick Will be able to pass on.
o Vehicle Talks/Overland Prep
The Unfinished Business crew will be on hand again to pass on their tips for Overland vehicle based travel based on their experience. Last events talk was well received with talk not only on equipment and vehicle preparation but also covering group dynamics. So expect diversity and to be fully engaged.
In addition to the Unfinished Business Crews talk we are also hoping that like minded travellers would be willing to show off their own prepared vehicles and equipment tips they have found work for their own travel. This may be which stove works best for them and wheres its kept through to which awning or sleeping system they use. Any experience gained is useful advice to be shared with others.

o RC Crawlers Area.
Following the success of our first Radio Controlled (RCs) course build back in May we will be making another intriguing course for your to try out your RCs on over the course of the weekend. The aspiration is to make the course available throughout the whole event, we welcome any suggestions or specifics people may like. We will have various RC Supporters on site over the weekend and there is the possibility they will have RCs to use to should you not have your own.
Bolt On Activities include:
Adventure Road Book £15 – a navigational road book we have put together to guide you around approx. 100miles of various routes including greenlanes. This is designed as a days activity with notes suggesting lunch stops, fuel stations, escape routes to add to satnav etc. designed to be used in conjunction with a 1:50k map (map sheets tbc). You will need a compass, highlighters/pens/scissors/tracing paper/compass.
4×4 Tuition £35pp – We are able to offer upto 1:2 ratio instructional 4×4 Driver Training lessons in your own vehicle. Expect the lesson to last 45mins. The course is designed to be non damaging and the instructor will tailor the course to suit your individual requirements and vehicles capability. (Within reason!)
4×4 Recovery Training £15pp – We will be running a 4×4 Recovery Training course using non vehicle mounted winch systems over the course of the weekend. Min of 4 people per course. We will provide all the equipment you will require less a set of gloves which you should bring. 45min lesson.
Mad Monks Ultra Passenger Route £45pp – There will be 4×4 passenger rides in a current Ultra4 based vehicle. These session are the ultimate experience for anyone who likes something out of the ordinary! You will be fully strapped in with a 5 point harness and your helmet will have communication kit to allow you to hear the discussions between the driver and the codriver. We have a dedicated extreme off road route where you can expect to experience winching and competitive style driving in a controlled environment. The in car experience will last approx. 45mins. You will be escorted to the venue which is approx. 1 mile from the site, and brought back after. 2 x Spectators are welcome to join you to watch. Participants need to be 18yrs+.
4×4 Technical Discussion £10pp – Following on the success from previous events we will be again offering people the chance to attend one of our technical 4×4 discussion groups. These groups are customer led where we will convey our knowledge of various off road systems and aids to help enable you to get more from your vehicle. Topics that can be covered included torque biasing diffs, Terrain response, Hill descent control, Electronic traction control, Gradient Release control, Stability control. There may be practical demonstrations to the discussion depending on requirements. 30min session, min 4 people.
4×4 Passenger Rides £10pp – Our Safari Route in May proved very popular although we expect the ground conditions in October to be less favourable. To that end we are offering passenger rides on sections of the off road safari route for those still wanting to fulfil their off road appetite! All under 16s are to be accompanied. You will be driven by one of our experienced off road instructors.
Guided Walks £5pp – For those looking for something different Mark Morgan, the landowner, has a wonderfully fulfilling informative walk organised for the surrounding area. Approx. 60mins long at a leisurely pace. You will need to be physically fit to attend this activity – there are a few hills to climb.
Rob Kranz Photography £45pp – We are delighted to be able to offer 10 places on a one day course consisting of 4- 4.5hrs of tuition/guidance on travel/ adventure photography. The same course will run Sat and Sun, so if your out on the road book one day you can still attend the next day. The nature of the course time is split morning and afternoon (to enable you to gather your photographs) so you can still work in other activities.
