The Bigger Picture: Understanding disability and care across the older population

The Care Act represents a major challenge to everyone working in social care to identify disability and prevent need across the entirety of their local population, including carers.

The Strategic Society Centre and Independent Age have therefore undertaken detailed new research on disability and caring among older people in every local authority area and region of England, integrating data from multiple sources.

This event marks the launch of this research and will explore:

• Disability - what percentage of the older population struggle with activities of daily living and how does this vary across areas?
• Unmet need - how adequate is support to those receiving paid and unpaid care?
• 'Capped cost' reforms - what will the wealth profiles of disabled older people in different regions mean for eligibility under the ‘capped cost’ funding reforms?
• Realising the vision - how should policymakers and local authorities now seek to achieve the aspirations of the Care Act around information and prevention?
