Description

THE BIRMINGHAM CONVERSATION:
Next steps for Christian youth work, ministry and training

AIM:
To enable those involved in leading and directing Christian youth work and ministry in churches and Christian agencies across the UK, and those involved in theological education and training for the workforce, to meet together and to talk through the next steps in addressing the current challenges facing Christian youth work, ministry and training

Through this conversation we aim to:

  • Recognise and affirm our common unity in God’s kingdom in delivering Christian youth work and training, and supporting the workforce

  • Raise the profile of quality Christian youth work and ministry training across the four UK nations

  • Continue to work for excellence in training, research, practice and partnership, taking forward the ideas which came out of the Belfast Conference (May18) and the Birmingham Conversation (Nov18)

STRUCTURE:

The event will include updates on sector developments and the initiatives we committed to undertake in November 2018 with an invitation to work collectively on future actions. The draft schedule for the event is:

1. THE CHANGING CONTEXT OF OUR WORK (10:30-11:15)

  • New developments in youth work across the four nations, looking especially at government policy and sector activities.

  • New and revised frameworks (revised National Occupational Standards for Youth Work) and on the challenges facing Christian youth work training and university programmes

2. PROGRESS SINCE BIRMINGHAM CONVERSATION 1.0 (11:15-11:45)

  • An update on the work which has taken place to develop the '5 workstreams' from the Birmingham Conversation 1.0 (Nov18)

3. WORKING GROUPS (11:45-12.45)

  • Key groups to talk further about the issues raised and to work on the themes of: PROMOTING TRAINING (linking with PALYCW); A YOUTH WORK AND MINISTRY QUALITY MARK; NEW MODELS OF PRACTICE; THE RESEARCH COMMUNITY; YOUTH MINISTRY COMPETENCIES; TRAINING AND GUIDANCE FOR PLACEMENTS.

4. LEARNING FROM RESEARCH (13:45-14:45)

  • Group members have been invited to present learning from recent research initiatives. Presenters to be confirmed with joining instructions.

5. PLENARY (14:45-15:00)

We welcome representation from those leading and directing Christian youth work and ministry in churches and Christian agencies across the UK, and those involved in theological education and training for the workforce, with a view to a collaborative approach towards promoting high value learning and training opportunities.

(The event will commence with refreshments from 10.00am; the converstaion starting at 10.30am. Lunch will be provided and the event will close at 3.30pm in time for colleagues attending the National Youth Ministry Weekend at the same venue - details available at NYMW2019)
