In celebration of Black History Month, join us for the screening of The Black Italian Renaissance, a visually stunning and deeply inspiring documentary.
The film offers a fresh and powerful perspective on Italian and European history, beginning with the arts and expanding into broader cultural and political narratives, and challenging dominant views. It unfolds as a journey through cities like Florence, Rome, Venice, and Lisbon. Venice plays a central role, not only as a cultural icon but also as a historical site of the Mediterranean slave trade, which invites reflection on the city’s complex legacy and its place in a reimagined history.
After the screening, stay for a live Q&A session with Dr Angelica Pesarini (University of Toronto), activist and scholar of Black Italy, who also features in the film. The conversation will be led by three scholars from the University of Leeds: Dr Alex Bamji from the School of History, and Dr Laura Lucia Rossi (Italian) and Peter Haysom-Rodríguez (Portuguese) from the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. This is a unique opportunity to engage with the ideas behind the film and discuss its relevance today.
