About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

During this two hour ‘walk and talk’ workshop we will share and discuss stories of the old Derwent Valley Light Railway or ‘Blackberry Line’ that is now a footpath and cycle path through Tang Hall, York. Our aim is to gather stories of the line – past and present – that could help other people discover this special green space through a short film and website.

We will meet at St Nicks Environment Centre and go on a short walk along the Blackberry Line to refresh memories, share stories, and – perhaps – pick a blackberry or two. We’ll then return to St Nicks for a hot drink and some blackberry bakes, and discuss our stories and how they might inspire the film and website.

St Nicks is the green heart of York: a centre for nature and green living. The charity started as ‘Friends of St Nicholas Fields’ in the 1990s by transforming a former landfill site into a thriving Local Nature Reserve. We continue to manage it, with the help of many great volunteers, for the benefit of both wildlife and our visitors. We are based at St Nicks Environment Centre which combines many green features. From this base, we run projects, events and services which help to make York more sustainable.
