The Body Canvas Exhibition and Film Screening
Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM (GMT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Join the RAI for an evening of film and photography that looks at individuals and communities that engage in body modification around the world.
Suspend Your Beliefs will be screened at 6:15pm followed by a Q&A session with film maker Simone Clifford-Jaeger.
Suspension of the living body from hooks has been practiced in various cultural contexts and places in the past, but today forms part of a growing global interest in body modification. This film joins a group of contemporary British practitioners at a week-end meeting in Norfolk, examining what the experience of suspension means to them, and particularly its role in their understanding of the relationship between their selves, their bodies and the world.
Discussion will be followed by a glass of wine and a chance to explore the Body Canvas Exhibition and meet some of the photographers whose work is exhibited. The exhibition includes 35 stunning images of tattooing, piercing, and body reshaping from initiation rites in Papua New Guinea to gender reassignment in the U.S.A. We look forward to seeing you at the event!
