Event description
Last lecture is a series of five: Examining representations of the body & person - Friend or foe: Images of foreigners

About this event

This tickets is for one lecture

This course will evaluate how the body and person are depicted in Egyptian art; textual evidence will also be considered. Identity markers such as such as hair, dress, and official insignia will be evaluated. Images of non-Egyptians will also be reviewed and we will consider if portraiture existed in ancient Egypt, questioning if we can identify the individual. In addition, we will evaluate the cultural and religious beliefs that underpinned these representations.

Organiser Dr Joanne Backhouse

Organiser of The Body & Person in Ancient Egypt(Pt.2.5) Friend or foe - Foreigners

I am a lecturer in Egyptology, specialising in the material culture of ancient Egypt. My research focuses on representations of the female form in two and three dimensions, but I have a wide interest in the evolution of style throughout Pharaonic history. Before lockdown I taught in a variety of venues in the North-West of England. I am also Chair of Wirral Ancient Egypt Society.
