A guided trail running journey through ancient Scots pine & rugged moorland around a remote loch, to spend a night in Glen Affric ecohostel

About this event

The Bothy Run (GLEN AFFRIC) image

If you’re a trail runner then this is THE best wilderness adventure the Scottish Highlands has to offer - and just 45mins from Inverness! Fresh air and tranquility, remote trails, scenic lochs and nothing but mountains all around. ‘The Bothy Run’ is a two-day mini-break that takes runners deep into the Glen Affric National Nature Reserve which is 'often described as the most beautiful glen in Scotland'!

We will run past a mountain hut and a bothy, stopping-by to learn about the interesting history, culture and upkeep of these refuges, enroute to the isolated Glen Affric Ecohostel, itself a former stalking bothy www.hostellingscotland.org.uk/hostels/glen-affric This rustic hostel is the perfect location to get away from it all and relax in an area of natural beauty. Once at the eco-hostel, we will spend the evening ‘cooking-up’ and enjoying a roaring fire.

On day-2 we will run a different trail to complete a loop through this ancient and majestic landscape.

In this introduction to fast-packing, you will need to run with your sleeping bag, clothing and food but you do not need to carry a stove, utensils or sleeping mat - a perfect taster of multi-day trail running.

Your guides will not only show you the way and keep you safe, but will regale you with tales of ‘Bothy nights'! We will cover the role of the MBA and Bothy Code, so that you’ll not only feel inspired to explore more, but will understand what is required to plan your own bothy adventure with friends. A donation of 1% of all ticket sales will be made to support the work of the MBA.

This event is sponsored by the Gin Bothy , which provides all our lucky runners with a wee nip of infused gin to enjoy by the fire! Gin Bothy is a Scottish, female-led, eco-aware and award winning gin distillery.

The weekend’s cost covers guiding and instruction with a Summer Mountain Leader qualified and/or Fell Running Association (FRA) accredited guides. It also includes an online Q&A session with Girls on Hills regarding equipment and approaches to fast-packing, and one night of self-catering accommodation in the Glen Affric hostel (we have full occupancy of the hostel).

The route is approx 18km (11 miles) on day 1 and only 12km (7.5miles) on day 2. The terrain is rolling and varied but not very hilly! You don’t need much experience and you needn’t be concerned about your pace. The journey will be sociable, with plenty of stops enroute for faffs, snacks and snaps! The start and finish location will be at the Glen Affric (road-end parking) but we will meet as a group in Cannich beforehand.

Upon booking you will receive an email which will include information about what to wear and bring with you. We will check kit and discuss final plans over coffee before we start Day 1.

Upon payment you will receive a set of questions in our confirmation email. TO COMPLETE YOUR BOOKING please reply to Girls on Hills with your answers (email: info@girlsonhills.com). This information will enable us to plan the perfect weekend for you.

We pride ourselves on being 'approachable and relatable' so please please do get in touch with any concerns or queries you might have now or nearer to the event. We look forward to having some fun and showing you some great trail running in the Scottish Highlands!

*Please note that Girls on Hills’ advise taking out your own insurance, as you would for any outdoor activity course or holiday.
