The Parliamentary Archives invites you to a talk on the history of the British Bobby on 16th April at 12.30pm.
We have two speakers giving two talks:
Clive Emsley, 'The British Bobby'
Clive Emsley is Emeritus Professor of History at the Open University. He was educated at the University of York and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was one of the first appointments made at the Open University in 1970. He has also taught and held research fellowships at the University of Paris VIII, and at various universities in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. For ten years he was President of the International Association for the History of Crime and Criminal Justice hosted by the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris, and he was a research associate of the Australian Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security.
Emily Bourne, 'The Best Bobby in the Lobby'
The Parliamentary Archives invite you to a talk that takes you back to the policing of Victorian era in the years after the passing of the 1829 Metropolitan Policing Act. In this new era of 'Peelers' and 'Bobbies' we introduce you to Eleazar Denning whose risen through the ranks of Westminster's A Division to become Chief Inspector of the Houses of Parliament. Through access to his handwritten notebooks we will tell stories of dynamite explosions, Chinese State Circus visits and numerous run-ins with his nemesis, the notorious Charles Bradlaugh MP.
