In the UK today, 6.5 million of us are carers; and 3 million of us combine paid work with caring for older, disabled or seriously ill relatives. One in six employees, often senior and experienced members of the workplace, leave work or reduce their working hours in order to provide care. If businesses adapt, these valuable, motivated and engaged staff can be supported to remain active and productive in the workplace leading to enhanced workforce retention, resilience and results.

This workshop aims to explore the ways in which businesses can innovate in order to maintain productivity, improve business performance in an ageing world and support employees through difficult and challenging times. Innovations such as dedicated carers leave, workplace carers passports to facilitate communication and consistency among line managers, staff carers networks to provide peer support and information on help with caring, including access to digital resources for carers - could all revolutionise the way we work.

This event is part of a series, Sheffield Solutions for Industrial Strategy, which aims to develop a deeper understanding of the UK Government's £4.7 billion Industrial Strategy and the specific opportunity this presents for academics and business to collaborate on key questions in order to advance the skills, infrastructure and innovative capacity of the UK.
