2014 has been described as the biggest ever year for sport in Scotland. At the centre of this is Glasgow 2014, XX Commonwealth Games. Glasgow is now widely recognised as one of the top sporting cities in the world and many students and staff from Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) will be a part of this event.*

Please join us to celebrate this year of sport in the inaugural Caledonian Sporting Conversation with GCU Honorary Graduate, Dr Katherine Grainger CBE, Britain's most successful international female rower. Originally from Glasgow, Katherine studied at Edinburgh University, where she took up the sport in 1993.

Her international rowing career took off in 1997 and since then she has won 6 world championships. Uniquely in the UK, she has won world championship medals in all available Olympic boat classes. She has won 3 Olympic silver rowing medals at Sydney, Athens and Beijing and in 2012 she won the Olympic gold with Anna Watkins in the double scull. Katherine is the only British female athlete from any sport to win medals in four consecutive Olympic Games.

She was awarded an MBE in 2006, and a CBE for services to sport in 2012. Katherine has an honours LLB (Edinburgh), an MPhil in Law (Glasgow) and in 2013 completed a PhD (Kings College, London). Alongside her studies, Katherine also wrote her autobiography 'Dreams Do Come True' which was published in June 2013.

This event will take place at Glasgow Caledonian University, Deeprose Theatre, Govan Mbeki Building . Registration begins at 5.30pm ahead of the conversation at 6.00pm, with a drinks reception to follow.

*In September of this year, GCU will offer new undergraduate and postgraduate courses in International Sport Management. GCU is also home to the Sport and Identities Research Cluster, an inter-disciplinary group of scholars recognised internationally for their research on sport.
