The Cambridge History of Cuban Literature

Instituto Cervantes in Manchester and Leeds, in collaboration with Durham University, presents the fifth edition of "Ex Libris: Publications in Hispanic Studies" series. Under the coordination of Professor H. Rosi Song from Durham University, this programme aims to highlight and promote the most recent publications in the field of Hispanic Studies.

Fourth session: The Cambridge History of Cuban Literature, edited by Vicky Unruh and Jaqueline Loss.

Extending from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, The Cambridge History of Cuban Literature is the first book in English to tell the intricate story of Cuban literary-intellectual culture from the seventeenth-century to the twenty-first century. This landmark book highlights the intricacies of linguistic and cultural translation embodied in telling a story in English about a body of work expressed predominantly in Spanish, but also French, Haitian Kreyòl, Angolan Portuguese, and English. Broad in its scope, this book encompasses such major figures as Gómez de Avellaneda, Heredia, Plácido, Manzano, Villaverde, Martí, Casal, Carpentier, L. Cabrera, Mañach, Loynaz, Piñera, Lezama Lima, and Cabrera Infante, as well as theatre and performance groups, film, post-revolutionary projects, post-1989 Special Period writers, and literature of Cuba's diasporas. It highlights four key features weaving through Cuban literary history: its engagement with international networks; its key role in cultural identity debates throughout Latin America; persistent debates about race, gender, and class; and the tropes of travel and movement―voluntary, exploratory, enslaved, migratory, or exilic.

Desde el siglo XVII hasta el XXI, The Cambridge History of Cuban Literature es el primer libro en inglés que cuenta la compleja historia de la cultura literaria e intelectual cubana desde el siglo XVII hasta el XXI. Este libro resalta las complejidades de la traducción lingüística y cultural encarnadas en contar una historia en inglés sobre un cuerpo de obras expresadas predominantemente en español, pero también en francés, kreyòl haitiano, portugués angoleño e inglés. Amplio en su alcance, este libro abarca figuras importantes como Gómez de Avellaneda, Heredia, Plácido, Manzano, Villaverde, Martí, Casal, Carpentier, L. Cabrera, Mañach, Loynaz, Piñera, Lezama Lima y Cabrera Infante, así como grupos teatrales y de performance, cine, proyectos postrevolucionarios, escritores del Periodo Especial post-1989 y literatura de las diásporas cubanas. Destaca cuatro características clave que atraviesan la historia literaria cubana: su conexión con redes internacionales; su papel clave en los debates sobre la identidad cultural en toda América Latina; los persistentes debates sobre raza, género y clase; y los tropos de viaje y movimiento―voluntarios, exploratorios, esclavizados, migratorios o exiliados.
