The Cantus Ensemble presents: Concerto for Choir
Overview
Alfred Schnittke's Concerto for Choir, completed in 1985, stands as a monumental a cappella work in the 20th-century choral repertoire. Using texts taken from the Book of Lamentations by the 10th-century Armenian monk Grigor Narekatsi , the piece is a stunning example of Schnittke's use of multiple styles, masterfully blending ancient Russian Orthodox chant with dense, dissonant modern harmonies. Its four movements explore themes of spiritual struggle, repentance, divine grace, and wider mysticism - resulting in a profound emotional journey for both performers and listeners alike.
Concerto for Choir remains a cornerstone of contemporary choral music, and we are delighted to start our 15th anniversary season with a performance of this extraordinary piece.
