The Crossness Pumping Station is a former sewage pumping station, constructed between 1859 and 1865, and designed by engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette and architect Charles Henry Driver. It features spectacular ornamental cast ironwork, that Nikolaus Pevsner described as "a masterpiece of engineering – a Victorian cathedral of ironwork".

This visit will include an illustrated talk giving the historical context and impetus for Bazalgette’s revolutionary sewage system for London, a guided tour of the site and engines, a chance to see the engines ‘in steam’, a ride on the narrow gauge railway, and an opportunity to look around their Great Stink exhibition and extraordinary collection of toilets.

Meeting Point: The tour starts at 2 pm outside the Valve House, Crossness Pumping Station, Thames Path, Crossness SE2 9AQ . Members can arrive on site to peruse the space from 12:30 pm. Vintage buses will be running from Abbey Wood Station.

How do I get to the meeting point?

Vintage buses will be running from Abbey Wood Station. You can travel to this location by overground train or the Elizabeth line to Abbey Wood. Alternatively there is a 20 minute walk to the site.

Cancellations

Cancellations will be accepted up to a week before the event. A refund will be issued but will be subject to a £10 deduction per ticket for administrative costs.
