Event description

Description

The Central Belter is a new bikepacking route currently in development, designed by Markus Stitz, with assistance from local riders. This is the inaugural group ride. More information can be found at bikepackingscotland.com/centralbelter

Starting on Portobello Beach the Central Belter will incorporate most parts of the popular Capital Trail with an extension into East Lothian to feature the Herring Road. The route will also include parts of the Reiver Raid in the Ale Water Valley in the Scottish Borders before following the Capital Trail back to the Pentland Hills.

From here the route takes you through Edinburgh across Corstorphine Hill and on to the hidden gems of West Lothian, passing historical sights like the cottage in which James Watt laid down the plans for his steam engine, Cairnpapple Hill and Beecraigs Country Park. Past the famous Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel the trail travels further into the Carron Valley to Tappoch Broch, an iron-age broch near Torwood, and on to Carron Reservoir, before hitting North Third Reservoir near Stirling, which offers magic views and technically challenging trails.

After Stirling the Central Belter takes you past the famous Doune Castle and on Sustrans Route 7 through Glen Ogle, one of the most scenic stretches to cycle in Scotland. After a section on the West Highland Way from Crianlarich to Tyndrum it follows the route of the Highland Trail past Loch Lyon, and on an old coffin road back to Killin on Loch Tay. Past Ben Lawers it then takes you to a very remote section of the Highlands past Loch Rannoch and Loch Garry to Dalnaspidal near the Pass of Drumochter.

The route from here is currently under development, but will travel past Pitlochry and Dundee and down the Fife Coastal Path back to Edinburgh.

The route will be finished in summer 2017. The total distance will be between 1000 and 1200km, we can confirm the final length once the route is finished, hopefully by mid-August.

This is a strenous multi-day bikepacking expedition, requiring good levels of fitness, ideally a mountain bike, and experience riding in remote locations. Ideally you will have participated in bikepacking events beforehand, or have sufficient cycle touring experience. SPOT trackers and helmets are obligatory for the group ride.

The Rules

  1. You must stick to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Respect the landowner's properties, shut all gates, don't leave any rubbish and leave all livestock and wildlife undisturbed.
  2. Complete the entire route, under your own power - no drafting.
  3. Be completely self-supported throughout the ride - absolutely no support crews, absolutely no gear sharing. You can, however, ride as part of a small group of friends, as long as you are equipped to ride the entire route on your own (but no friends and family following the ride, effectively acting as a sag-wagon).
  4. Only use commercial services that are available to all challengers - no private resupply, no private lodging.
  5. If you have to leave the route, you must rejoin it at the exactly same spot. No caches of any kind.
  6. No pre-arranged support, which means before you begin your ride - e.g. booking a B&B, arranging to meet a vehicle.
  7. No travel by any motorised means during your ride - by all means do so if necessary, but understand if you do your attempt is over.
  8. Gear - nothing required, nothing prohibited.

You agree that you accept the rules above when registering. You agree that you will release the organisers from any and all responsibility of liability for injuries or damages or to any other person. You agree not to make a claim against or sue this organiser for injuries or damages relating to this event. There might be a small fee to cover tracking and photography, we will confirm that later.
