Description

Embedding children and young people’s participation in health and social care services - presented by Louca-Mai Brady, postgraduate researcher at the University of the West of England and independent consultant

The case for children and young people’s participation has been well-documented, but there is a lack of evidence on how to ensure that their participation in health and social care service settings is meaningful for all those involved, effective in terms of impacts on service decision-making and outcomes for children and young people, and sustained. Louca-Mai is currently using action research to explore these issues in two case studies, as part of her doctoral research. In this seminar she will explore what it means to ‘embed’ children and young people’s participation in health and social care services and discuss some of the issues emerging from her research and a number of related workshops. Attendees will also have an opportunity to contribute to this on-going work by reflecting on their own knowledge and experience of children and young people’s participation in health and social care, and what is required for that participation to be meaningful, effective and sustained.

Louca-Mai Brady has longstanding interests in children and young people’s participation and facilitating their involvement in research, policy and practice. She has over 16 years’ experience as a social researcher working in the voluntary and public sectors, including the Disability Rights Commission. Her most recent role was as a senior researcher at the National Children’s Bureau Research Centre, where she led the Centre’s work on the involvement in children and young people in research and co-authored guidelines on research with children and young people. Louca-Mai has a particular interest in children and young people’s involvement in health and social care services and research and since 2007 has been a member of INVOLVE, the National Institute for Health Research advisory group that supports public involvement in health, public health and social care research. She also facilitates various training courses including workshops for Guy's and St Thomas and Great Ormond Street NHS Trusts on ‘patient and public involvement in paediatric research’, and she is currently supporting the involvement of young people with experience of using drug and alcohol services in an NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme study.
