Event description

Description

The artist generally attempts a representative portrayal when attempting a portrait, as Edward Burne-Jones stated, "The only expression allowable in great portraiture is the expression of character and moral quality, not anything temporary, fleeting, or accidental." This tour examines the changing nature of portraiture from the early Renaissance through to the English Enlightenment.

Starting with the earliest form of portraiture – donor incorporation into imagery created for religious devotion, the day moves onto the objectification of women and the differing ways in which they are depicted. One of the most revolutionary portrait painting was the Arnolfini portrait in the National Gallery. The day moves on to examine aspects of power and virility in portraiture before looking at celebrity.

The price includes the services of your lecturer, a morning and afternoon tea/coffee break
