Event description

Description

Saturday 16 November 2019 2.00 - 4.00pm

Room L60, Writtle University College, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 3RR.

When Joseph Banks first sent out plant hunters from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in the late eighteenth century, it was with the remit to find new plants from across the globe that would benefit the British Empire; whether medicinally, commercially or for the garden.

However, less than 100 years later the main emphasis of plant hunters was simply to discover plants to add to the collections of wealthy Victorian show offs.

Today most botanic gardens, although show-casing beautiful plants, have three main aims - conservation, education & benefit-sharing.

This talk aims to show how the role of the plant hunter has changed since the time of Joseph Banks, and acts as an introduction to our theme for next year on Plant Discovery and Conservation.
