The Children's Learning Disability Service In Person Listening Event

Come join us at Marks Farm Community Centre for a special in-person event where we want to hear from you!

This is an opportunity for children, young people, parents and carers who have used this service to come and meet the team and talk about what went well (or not!) about this experience. The commissioner for the service will also be at the event, and so this is a great opportunity to have your views about the service heard by those who can support bringing about change.

The Children's Learning Disability Service is for those aged 5-18 years with a diagnosed moderate to severe learning disability* and behaviours which challenge. This event is available for residents of Southend, Essex and Thurrock.

  • Access: The venue has ample parking available on site, and is a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus stop (Tesco superstore) and a 20 minute walk from the nearest train station (Freeport)
  • Facilities: We have a hall hired for the event, which has a fenced outdoor area immediately outside if required
  • Activities: We will provide sensory/play-based equipment and arts and crafts for children and young people wishing to attend the event
  • Refreshments: Light refreshments will be provided so do let us know of any dietary requirements when you book

NB. Please book enough tickets for each member of your party, including children and young people. Please note the maximum number of children per booking is 1 (to allow us to manage the event safely) with up to 2 supporting adults. Regretfully, we are unable to accommodate babies or young children under the age of 5 at this event.

* A learning disability is the way it affects a person learning new things in any area of life, not just at school. It affects the way a person understands information and how they communicate. They may have difficulty with;

1) Understanding new information.

2) Learning new skills.

3) Coping independently (NHS 2015).

Examples of a learning disability include (but are not limited to): Global Developmental Delay, Downs Syndrome, Chromosomal Disorders, Fragile X Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Please note that Autism is not a Learning Disability however, around 50% of autistic people may also have a learning disability (Mencap, 2017).
