About this event
Welcome to the Norwich Cocoa Summit!
Date: Tuesday 23rd October
Location: The Auditorum @ The Forum, Norwich
As part of Norwich Chocolate Festival, the Auditorium at The Forum will host a special screening of The Chocolate War— a documentary that cuts to the core of why this festival exists.
The film follows human-rights lawyer Terrence Collingsworth as he takes on the might of the chocolate industry in court, seeking justice for families and children trapped in slavery and forced labour in cocoa supply chains. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Miki Mistrati, it draws on testimonies from cocoa-growing communities, on-the-ground reporting, and landmark legal battles. Shot across West Africa, Europe, and the US, it reveals the stark contrast between glossy corporate promises and lived reality.
After the screening, we’ll be joined live on screen (tech permitting) by Mistrati from Copenhagen and Collingsworthfrom Washington, DC. Both had hoped to be with us in person, but as you can imagine, urgent court cases do arise. They are, however, delighted to connect directly with the Norwich audience — and some special guests in the room — for an in-depth discussion and Q&A.
This event is a festival highlight: a rare opportunity for audiences in Norwich to engage with two world-renowned campaigners for justice, hear the untold stories behind the chocolate we eat, and reflect together on what a truly Responsible future for chocolate must demand.
Together, we can open up these important conversations to more people.
Miki Mistrati
Investigative filmmaker & journalist (Copenhagen)
Born in Copenhagen in 1968, Miki Mistrati is a Danish journalist-filmmaker who has worked across Danish and international media since the 1990s, making 85+ films since 1996. Since 2007 he has pursued a continuous investigation into chocolate — from The Dark Side of Chocolate and Shady Chocolate to Cadbury Exposed and The Chocolate War — following the supply chain from farms to famous brands and challenging the stories told to consumers.
In the UK, his credits include BBC, Channel 4 (Dispatches) and Sky, with investigations such as Starbucks & Nespresso: The Truth About Your Coffee. His latest film, If Pigs Could Talk, is award-recognised in 2024–25. Known for tenacity and clear-eyed compassion, he spends time with those most affected, asks direct questions of those in power, and uses film to amplify voices rather than speak over them. He supports IMS and ARIJ, and has authored 14 books (fiction and non-fiction).
Terrence (Terry) Collingsworth
Human rights lawyer; Founder & Executive Director, International Rights Advocates (Washington, DC)
Based in Washington, DC, Terry Collingsworth is a leading human rights lawyer focused on corporate accountabilityand Responsible supply chains, with a sustained emphasis on West African cocoa.
For 35+ years, he has worked alongside survivors, unions, and community partners to challenge slavery and forced child labour, first at the International Labor Rights Forum (as General Counsel and later Executive Director) and now through International Rights Advocates (IRAdvocates), which he founded to pursue strategic, impact-driven litigation. Terry’s casework spans significant corporate-accountability actions — including the 2024 U.S. jury verdict against Chiquita Brandsconcerning support for Colombian paramilitaries, and long-running litigation related to ExxonMobil in Aceh, Indonesia— as well as petitions and consumer-protection actions aimed at stopping imports made with abuse and compelling truthful communication with consumers. His advocacy also reaches beyond cocoa: he was featured on BBC One’s Panorama: The Electric Car Revolution – Winners and Losers (2021), discussing risks in cobalt and electric-vehicle battery supply chains and the practical steps companies can take toward genuinely Responsible sourcing. Plain-spoken and persistent, Terry brings legal precision and a survivor-centred approach that keeps dignity at the heart of change.
