It’s October 1979 and a few Aussie and Kiwi backpackers are groggily waking up to the distant sound of church bells on a Sunday morning. “Must be beer o’clock!” one says to the others and theystumble down to the local, The Golden Lion in Fulham Broadway. The proprietor, Sean Sullivan, pulls their pints and tells them he’s putting on a comedian this week as well as the usual Sunday afternoon striptease act. My Sharona by The Knack comes on in the background and the backpackers, beers in hand, move through the smoky pub towards the stage to await the day's entertainment. The Church is born.
35 years, 10 venues and well over 1.5 million patrons later, The Church truly has become a world famous institution. A ‘must do’ on any OE list. Revelry remains the order of the day with comedians, strippers and great classic tunes to boot. As the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.
